Acceptance Doesn't Mean Passive

"And, acceptance is the answer to all my problems today..." is a statement we often hear in the rooms of recovery, and for good reason. But do most of us truly understand the power acceptance grants us?

As we gain a full understanding of acceptance, we often learn that our approach and use of the tool has been flawed. Too often, we define acceptance as the art of resigning to what life delivers us, making it a passive quality where we surrender to the events of the day. Yet, true acceptance is far from passive; it is an active, deliberate process that plays a crucial role in how we manage the ups and downs of life. Acceptance isn't solely about being okay with what happens to us; it's about allowing ourselves to assess our situation honestly and recognize what is real so we can accurately determine how to move forward purposefully.

The first step in genuine acceptance is to secure an unfiltered view of our reality. This involves a brutally honest assessment of our situation, void of denial, wishful thinking, and rationalization. It's about facing the facts head-on, no matter how uncomfortable they may be. This stage is critical because it forms the foundation for all subsequent decisions and actions. The fact is, without a true grasp of what our reality is, we cannot effectively address what our reality can become.

Once we clearly understand our circumstances, it is our job to define what is in our control and what is not. By identifying what we can control, we empower ourselves to take purposeful action. In accepting what is beyond our reach or out of our control, we enable ourselves to save energy for the battles we can win. Perhaps most importantly, acceptance gives us the opportunity to move past the realities we cannot change and focus directly on the things we can.

The greatness of life and recovery is that we don't have to stand by and accept the people, places, and things that limit our ability to find peace, joy, and fulfillment. Unleashing the remarkable qualities of acceptance requires honesty, discernment, and the courage to confront our situation and character defects. By embracing acceptance in this fuller sense, we open the door to peace of mind, growth, and transformation. Acceptance is the starting point for change, a truth that underscores much of our life and recovery. We must remember that the only way we achieve our hopes and dreams is by accepting the realities of the present moment and then acting based on who we want to be and where we want to go!
